About Grevelingen Nature Reserve

The Grevelingen Nature Reserve is situated around the Grevelingenmeer, a saline lagoon formed after the damming of estuaries in the Delta Works flood protection project. Located between the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland, it is the largest saltwater lake in Europe and part of the Oosterschelde estuarine system. Its waters maintain a rich marine environment thanks to limited freshwater inflows, preserving a diverse habitat that supports a wide range of aquatic species including seagrasses, oysters, flatfish, and crabs. The reserve's shoreline and adjacent dunes provide vital breeding and resting grounds for migratory birds such as spoonbills, terns, and herons. Established to protect this rare marine and coastal ecosystem, the Grevelingen is prized for its crystal-clear waters and underwater biodiversity, attracting nature lovers, scuba divers, and kayakers. There are several marked walking and cycling trails around the perimeter, offering stunning views of the water and salt marshes. Bird hides and observation points allow for quiet wildlife viewing. Recreational fishing and sailing are popular here, complemented by local facilities and small marinas. The reserve also plays a key role in scientific research on coastal protection and marine ecology. Visitors come year-round to explore both land and water environments, relish the peaceful natural atmosphere, and engage in outdoor adventure activities amid one of the Netherlands’ most remarkable saltwater nature areas.
